FC Barcelona will be honored by UEFA for their five Champions League wins
Zubizarreta, Belletti, Puyol and Abidal. 4 legendary former Barcelona players will be in charge of extracting balls in the Champions League draw which will be held in Monaco next August 27. The reason is that FC Barcelona will be honored by UEFA for their five Champions League wins.
The victory over Juventus in the Champions League last season allowed the club to enter the group of 'Badge of Honour' clubs made up by Madrid, Milan, Bayern Munich and Liverpool, who have won the trophy at least five times, and Ajax, having won it three times in a row.
To get this recognition, there will be a representative from each of the five Champions conquered by the club. The former players that reached the title and will participate in the ceremony are Andoni Zubizarreta (1992), Juliano Belletti (2006), Carles Puyol (2009) and Eric Abidal (2011).
Meanwhile, Andres Iniesta, MVP of Berlin, will be in charge of bringing the Champions League trophy up on stage, and then the four former players will be responsible of choosing the balls with the names of the teams in the draw, so to determine the calendar of the Champions League competition, which will begin in mid-September. Paolo Maldini and Javier Zanetti will also attend the ceremony, as representatives of next venue of the competition: Milan.
Messi and Suárez, candidates for best player
After the draw, the best UEFA male and female player will be announced. In the male category, Barcelona have two candidates, Leo Messi and Luis Suárez, who will contend for the title along with Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo.
