The 'snip' signings in FC Barcelona's history
Today we celebrate 'Black Friday', a tradition that began in the United States and landed hard in our country, Catalonia. The shops offer spectacular discounts before Christmas. Even FC Barcelona offers discounts on this Saturday's match against Real Sociedad.
At Weloba we wanted to participate in 'Black Friday' remembering the best signings at a low price. Bargains that offered a great performance at the club. We have set the maximum cost of EUR 10 million and we have discarded the players who came with carte blanche, because there was no transfer.
1. Gerard Piqué - €5 million - Manchester United
Vidic and Ferdinand prevented a young Pique to be starter at Manchester United, and in the summer of 2008 FC Barcelona paid five million euros for having the center-back back to the Catalan team. He came from the hand of Guardiola and quickly became a cornerstone of the treble-winning season. Over the years he has become one of the best central defenders in the history of Barcelona and multiplied his value price. 5 million paid to Manchester United are one of the biggest bargains ever seen in football.
2. Figo - €2.5 million - Sporting Lisbon
After the 94/95 season with no titles, Johan Cruyff looked for a young talent to revolutionize the team and make people forget the figure of Laudrup, who had gone to Madrid. The chosen one was a young Portuguese from Sporting Lisbon: Luis Figo. Taking a duplication of contracts between Parma and Juventus, FC Barcelona came first and closed the deal for only €2.5 million. After five seasons, he became captain and idol of the fans with a spectacular performance. But in 2000 he signed a pre-contract with Florentino Pérez and left to Real Madrid, which paid the €60 million euros clause.
3. Romario - €3.6 million - PSV
One of the most magical players who have passed through the Camp Nou was Romario and his signing was almost zero cost. Cruyff wanted to incorporate a Brazilian striker who was shinning in Holland with PSV. The signings was closed for €3.6 million. Although he only stayed for two seasons, Romario left a great record for fans with amazing goals.
4. Stoichkov - €3 million - CSKA Sofia
After a great performance against Barça playing with CSKA Sofia, the ability of one of the club's agents, Josep Maria Minguella, allowed the arrival of Bulgarian Hristo Stoichkov at the Camp Nou in 1990. Stoichkov rapidly won the esteem of the public because of his personality and dedication. It was one of the key pieces of the Dream Team of Cruyff in offensive positions and has been one of the most depreciated signings in the club's history. Nobody will ever forget Hristo.
5. Touré Yaya - €9 million - Monaco
In his beginnings, he played everywhere. Ivorian ASEC Mimosas, Belgian KSK Beveren, Ukrainian Meralurg Donesk, Greek Olympiakos and French Monaco. Finally, when he was 24, he signed for Barça as a not-recognized player worldwide. Recommended by Bojan Krkic's father, he cost 9 million and played in Barcelona for three years, until Busquets appeared. Although Guardiola wanted him to stay, Touré wanted to become one of the best midfielders in the world and he got it in Manchester City, the club that paid €32 million for him.
