Capello said: "I had never seen a player like Messi before"
August 24, 2005. Joan Gamper Trophy. Barça - Juventus. The Blaugrana team, leaded by Frank Rijkaard, was presented before the fans after having achieved a Liga and signing new players. But the player who shone on his own merit that night at Camp Nou was a young Argentine player coming from Barça's Academy.
His names was Lionel Messi. He was shy and lean anb Barça was thinking on sending him on loan. The crowd was ready to enjoy watching another Gamper, a typical preseason match...
The match started and after some minutes a question started to fill Camp Nou. Who is this player with the number 30? Messi? Yes, that little guy who scored against Albacete at the end of the last season. Veteran players like Vieira or Cannavaro were astonished watching Messi dribbling them time after time. No one could stop him.
The match ended 2-2 and Juventus won the trophy in the penalty shoot-out. Afterwards, Juve's coach, Fabio Capello, tried to sign the Argentine and said in press conference: "I had seen him in the Argentine U18 team and I though it was a great player. But watching him in this stadium, with this jersey, in front of so many people... it's absolutely different. I had never seen a player like him before."
