Ernesto Valverde arrive at Camp Nou with a grat experience as a manager and as a player, but maybe he is not that well known by Barcelona fans. Looking into his first steps and hearing the people tat has worked with him, we can discover a very special figure. Photography and culture lover, with his own personality. This is Barcelona's new manager.
1 - Basque but from Extremadura
Ernesto Valverde was born back in 1964 in a little village: Viandar de la Vera, in Extremadura (Cáceres). When he was young, his parents move to Vitoria and his father found a job at Mercedes (the car company). Valverde doesn't forget his roots and he has a house in Viandar de la Vera. Married and with 3 children, he loves going with the bike and motorcycle.
2 - Why he is called 'Txingurri'?
Javier Clemente first used this name when Valverde was his player. Txingurri means 'ant' in euskera. Valverde was a short and thin player but with a lot of strength and capable of dribbling any opponent. His career as a player wasn't easy. In the 80's he left Athletic Club and had to start his career at Espanyol with Clemente. At Barcelona, injuries didn't let him perfom at his best under Johan Cruyff. Then he played 6 good seasons at Athletic Club. He ended his career at Mallorca in Segunda División.
3 - Passion for pictures
"In my career as a player I joined a photography school. I thought I could work in that when I ended my career. When I was 2 seasons without coaching, I did it again, but now is impossible". Valverde explained his relationship with photography in the book "Medio Tiempo' back in 2012. Valverde has a great relationship with the film-maker David Trueba and the writer Bernardo Atxaga. His brother Mikel Valverde works as an illustrator and writer.
4 - Greek heroe
One of the clubs where he left best memories was at Olympiakos. He managed the club during 3 seasons in 2 different moments. And he has always won the league (2009, 2011 and 2012). He is considered as one of the best managers of the club's history.
5 - Respected in all the dressing rooms
One of his main good things is that all the people that have worked with him speak very well of his capacities. He likes to talk with all the members of the squad and has a special hand to treat the players that doesn't play that much. He is a quiet leader that gives always his maximum.
