"He fought a lot, I tried it, but I lost 4 finals"
Leo Messi lost last night his fourth final of a major tournament with Argentina. After the disappointment, the current captain of the Albiceleste (and top goalscorer in the team's history) explained to the media he is thinking about ending things with the Argentinian national team. Here are his statements:
Giving up on the national team
"I thought a lot about it in the dressing room and I think this is it, the national team is over for me..."
"It hurts me more than anyone, but it is clear it's not for me, unfortunately..."
"I think it is best for everyone, firstly for me... There are many people that are not satisfied (we are not either) with only reaching the final."
"I fought a lot, I tried it [but] it makes 4 lost finals, 3 of them in a row [2007 Copa América, 2014 World Cup, 2015 Copa América and 2016 Copa América]..."
"I wished more than anyone to win a title with the national team, but I didn't get it."
"I have tried a lot already... I wanted to be champion with Argentina but I didn't succeed."
Copa América's final
"I was trying to get it, it was the one (trophy) I wanted the most... It didn't work for me and I think that's it."
"It is a big disappointment... Moreover, I missed the penalty. The first one, crucial in order to make differences."
Here is one of Leo Messi's interventions (in Spanish) after the game:
