He will be the highest paid footballer of Athletic Club's history
Athletic Club's centre-back, Aymeric Laporte, is one of the most promising defenders in European football and the big clubs of the continent have had him in their shorlists for a while. In the last months, Barça and Manchester City have been said to insist to get the player. The Blaugranas like his ability to clear the ball with the right foot and his tactical positionning on the pitch but they couldn't gather the 50 million euros of the clause set by Athletic Club.
Guardiola's new Manchester City, not concerned by economic issues, was ready to pay that quantity for a player that perfectly matches the profile of centre-backs Guardiola wants and Txiki Begiristain already had put himself to work to sign him. According to some media, they were said to have offered him up to 8 million euros as a net wage per season. But finally, Laporte will keep playing in San Mamés and he refused any offers coming from the clubs that were interested in him.
The 22 year-old centre-back reached an agreement with Athletic Club to renew his contract until 2020 and the buyout clause goes from 50 million euros to 65 million. Moreover, his wage reaches 4.5 million euros a year making him the highest paid player in the Basque club's history.
Laporte recognised that he "had received the interest from various clubs, they were attractive projects but I had to make a decision and I decided to keep going at Athletic Club. For the family, the fans, the teammates. I've always felt very good in Bilbao and I want to keep growing."
