The manager found out about his dismissal through press
Monday afternoon, Rafa Benitez got a phone call and was asked to go to Santiago Bernabeu because of an emergency meeting called by the Board. As his interlocutor did not confirm him if the club would sack him or not, Benítez declined the invitation and did not go to Real Madrid's offices. This is how Antón Meana related the story during the radio program "el Club de la Mitjanit", to explain why Benitez only heard about his dismissal through press.
Terminating Rafa Benítez's contract will cost Madrid around 5 million euros. This figure is for the current season only and not the other two Madrid's manager had signed for. The reason for this varies according to different sources. Some claim that the Spanish coach would have gave up on the extra money, an unlikely idea given how the club treated him. Some others say that Benítez's contract contained a clause according to which he would only receive fees for the current season, would he be sacked before January the 31st.
In addition to the fees reserved for Benítez's dismissal, comes the cost of Zinedine Zidane's new contract, due to his move from reserve's coach to first team's. He signed a 3-year contract, for 2.5 million euros a year.
