Gaspart Bernabeu

It seems that Real Madrid will do whatever to avoid a Copa del Rey final between Barça and Athletic at their stadium, the biggest one in Spain amongst the neutrals. The club told the Spanish Federation they don't organize Champions or Copa finals and some excuses has started to emerge. Throughout the history, Barça have played 11 finals in Santiago Bernabéu, with 9 wins and 2 defeats.

The day Barça's anthem invaded Santiago Bernabéu

Madrid want to avoid a repetition of what happened in 1997, when Barça won Copa del Rey vs Betis (3-2) and Bernabéu became scenario of the Blaugrana celebration. Barça's anthem was heard several times thanks to Barça's vice president, Joan Gaspart, with the person in charge of the sound system. Gaspart then celebrated the title on the field together with Luis Enrique, Figo, De La Peña...

Precedent with Athletic

Last time Barça and Athletic played a Copa final at Santiago Bernabéu was in 1984. In that occasion, the title was won by the Basque team. Maradona started a quarrel against the opponent after the match.

The final of the bottles

One of the most legendary Copas was in 1968, when Barça defeated Madrid on their own field, 1-0, with the presence of the Spain dictator Francisco Franco and with an own goal by Zunzunegui. The match is remembered as "the final of the bottles" because of the throw of bottles from the stands to complain about the referee.

Other finals at Bernabéu

Apart from these three, Barça have played at Bernabéu in a final 8 times more, with 7 wins and 1 defeat. In 1988, Luis Aragonés' Barça won Copa del Rey 1-0 against Real Sociedad. Ten years before, in 1978, Michels' Barça (with players like Cruyff or Rexach) also won La Copa, this time facing Las Palmas and winning 3-1. In 1971, Barça also won this title defeating Valencia with a goal by Alfonseda in the minute 112 of the extra time.

If we go back, Barça also won the title in 1959 winning Granada 4-1 with two goals by Kocsis. In 1954 they lost against Valencia. In 1951, 1952 and 1953, Barça also won in that scenario defeating Real Sociedad, Valencia and Athletic respectively.
