The french center-back scored in the last two matches
Jérémy Mathieu was one of the most controversial signings in the beginning of the season, not for his quality but for the price for a 30-year-old player. In fact, thanks to a report made by Weloba in the beginning of the season, we discovered that after paying €20 million for him, Mathieu became the 30-year old most expensive defender in football history. Only four strikers were more expensive at the same age: Batistuta, Eto'o, Diego Milito and Ibrahimovic.
Besides, Barça fans had more reasons to get angry after discovering that the French could have joined the team the previous season paying half what was paid. However, after the two goals scored by him in the last two matches, no-one think he was an expensive signing. The center-back has not committed important mistakes during his first year so far and became a starter for many matches. As center-back and as full-back (not so often), Mathieu offered a correct performance. With this extra performance of two important goals versus Real Madrid and Celta de Vigo, the consideration towards Mathieu really improved.
