And the final conclusion: "If he is 100% fit, it's impossible to stop him"
Real Madrid former coach and future Bayern Munich manager, Carlo Ancelotti, explained on his column at the Chinese website Sina Sports the keys to try to stop Leo Messi which worked fine when he was in the White club, as the Argentine couldn't score in the 4 out of the last 5 matches. However, Ancelotti finally admits that if Messi is 100% fit, it's impossible to stop him:
Man-to-man marking, dismissed
"A man-to-man defense with him is really complicated; the defender should perform at a very high level. The best way to limit Messi is all the team putting a big effort, reducing distance between lines and avoiding he contacts with the ball."
Placing many players on midfield
"It's important to place a high number of players in this zone in order to destroy Barça's midfield, preventing them to play their style with freedom. This also reduces the options of Messi and the chances he gets the ball. Furthermore, it makes him move away from the positions where he is more dangerous. The players must be close each other and avoid any mistake."
Stopping him on the side
"We know he starts some plays on the side to reach the box. The midfielders should press to interfere and try to stop him on the side, because as long as he approach the box, he will feel comfortable to use his left foot."
Messi is not the only danger
"By doing all this, you then may face another problem: Barça have other weapons. If you put attention on Messi and focus all your defense on him, the danger can com from other players. As I said, the effort of all the team is crucial when facing Barcelona."
"My conclusion is that if Messi is 100% fit, it's impossible to try to stop him. No matter the coach you are, no matter tactics or defensive strategy. The immense talent of Messi prevents his opponents foresee him. So, there's no way to control him."
