The Turk commits a foul every 40 minutes and is the 6th player with more yellow cards shown
Arda Turan has not adapted to the style of FC Barcelona yet and is following his process of adaptation. The Turk started playing in January and, although having shown quality technical details, he still needs time to understand the complicated mechanisms of the Barça style.
Playing as midfielder, Arda is having problems in the defensive aspects, when pressing and cut the opponent's attack as requested by Luis Enrique. The Turk commit many fouls, is shown many yellow cards and even the coach reproached it in a press conference "He has an obsession of lying down on the floor to recover the ball."
In the 17 games he has played, Arda has committed 26 fouls, an average of a foul every 40 minutes. A really high number for a Barça player. For example, Piqué commits one every 134 minutes or Mascherano, one every 131 minutes. If you look at two other midfielders, the average of Iniesta is one every 96 minutes and Rakitic, one every 69 minutes.
As a result of these fouls, the Turkish has already seen six cards (four in La Liga, one in Champions League and one in Copa del Rey.) He is the 6th player with more yellow cards, although he is the 19th in number of minutes played. A problem that must be corrected with time, as it's risky to play with a footballer who sees so many cards.
The minutes of the cards
Arda has only played 4 completed games out of the 17. This figure is quite low for a player who has come to Barcelona to have an important role. One of the reasons for which he has been subbed-off has been the yellow card shown during a match. 2 of 6 cards have been shown in the first half, which forced a change because the game was tied (Las Palmas and Villarreal). Two more were shown after coming off the bench (Rayo and Arsenal). And the other two were shown in the last minutes of the game playing as a starter (Valencia and Málaga).
Has he always committed fouls?
Arda's problem has to do with adapting to Barça game, which forces the midfielders to press hard and try to recover balls when the team is losing. For example, last season with Atlético Madrid, Arda saw eight yellow cards in 46 games, a very different number. In Simeone's, the Turk played wider and other players were in charge of chasing the opponents in the midfield.
Path to follow
In Barça, Arda Turan will have to change this dynamic if he wants to enter more often in the plans of Luis Enrique. He can mirror on Rakitic, a player who came from Sevilla, where he had a similar role of Arda last season in the attacking midfielder. Rakitic successfully managed to become right center midfielder, a position where you need to calculated very well the defensive balance to allow freedom to the three forward beasts. Arda must accept the challenge. He can't wait more.
